Khalif Toombs was sentenced on Thursday, Sept. 14 in connection with the shooting death of Lamir King, 21, also of Atlantic City, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
Toombs pleaded guilty to first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, the prosecutor said.
Toombs at one point was best known as an Atlantic City High School basketball star who went on to play for South Carolina State University.
The plea calls for Toombs to serve 12 years in New Jersey State Prison under the No Early Release Act.
Toombs already is serving an 11-year sentence in federal prison for leading a Paterson-to-Atlantic-City drug ring that peddled heroin connected to 48 heroin overdose deaths and 84 other ODs, Daily Voice previously reported.
At 6:25 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2019, King was shot multiple times in his car outside of 701 North Ohio Avenue in Atlantic City and died from his injuries.
Jamie Sewell, Sr., 58, of Atlantic City, was arrested and later pleaded guilty for his role in the shooting. Sewell's plea calls for a sentence between 10 and 20 years in state prison. He will be sentenced later this year, the prosecutor said.
With his plea, Toombs admitted to hiring Sewell for the purpose of causing King’s death, the prosecutor said.
He will remain in the Atlantic County Justice Facility through sentencing, the prosecutor said. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 2.
